Kathy and I have known each other since we were pre-teens going to the same beach in the summertime. The beach association that our families belonged to was, and still is, known as Seafield.
Shortly after marrying, we moved to Rochester, New York where we sought out and met Marsha Hall Brown and her husband Bob. Kathy and Marsha spent hours talking about English Setters and handling and grooming while Bob and I spent hours playing pool and drinking beer in the basement. When asked of what she thought of our first English Setter, Marsha's only comment was that she liked the color.
In February, 1967, the four of us went to the Tri-Setter Specialty at the Statler Hilton Hotel in New York City where Kathy was introduced to Marsha's, Hudson English Setter friends as a professional handler of Collies. That day, Kathy showed Ch. Skidby's Bosum of Stone Gables in veterans class. Bosum was the sir of Amer., Can., Brd. Ch. Sir Kip of Manitou. We quickly became good friends with Sally and Dick Howe and Jane Slosson of Clariho and Beth and Stan Silverman of Manitou. That year, we leased Ch. Clariho Pell of Stone Gables from Commander Thomas Hall of Stone Gables and bred her to Ch. Sir Kip of Manitou. Kip became one of the big winners of his time, and Pell went on to become ESAA Damn of the Year.
In the early 1970's, we met and became best friends with Dot Rizzo from Canandaigua, NY. Dot loved English Setters and showed us several pictures of our dogs that she had taken at the local show in years past. Dot became a partner; whelping, raising and dog showing Seafield dogs for many years.
Our philosophy, at Seafield, always has been to maintain a strong bitch line. By carefully choosing studs that compliment our bitches in attributes and pedigree; we feel that we can maintain our strengths and eliminate weaknesses without loosing consistency. Kathy has spent countless hours studying dogs and pedigrees and talking with other knowledgeable breeders such as Sally Howe of Clariho. Experience in the last ten years has shown that the Seafield line, combined with the Kadon line is a compliment to each side. Kathy and Kay Monaghan Swanson of Kadon have become good friends and partners. While breeding, to us, is very serious business; we feel that showing is enjoying and socializing with your friends as well as doing your best in the ring.
There is truth to recent articles stating that a bitch can be pre-potent in breeding. We believe that, and believe that we have had several in the past thirty years. Our bitch line has included two ESAA Dams of the Year and one runner-up. They were direct descendants of each other. In 1983, Seafield won the ESAA Breeder of the Year award because of quality and consistency and not because of numbers. We have continued the strong pedigree and are pleased with both the young dog and bitch at home today.
We hope that you enjoy our web site.
